Sprayed foam is the best insulation currently available. It is far better performing than fiberglass batts (sprayed cellulose is the 2nd best type of insulation to use.) It is installed is done by a specialty subcontractor. Foam seals the irregularities and gaps around wires, electrical boxes, and framing very well, preventing air movement into and inside the walls. As a result, these walls have almost zero infiltration and exfiltration rates, high insulating value, and the interior spaces feel more comfortable.
The new house project on the 2nd page of this site and at the bottom here, was insulated entirely with sprayed foam, and was certified by the EPA's regional certification agency as an Energy Star Home. It's blower door test showed a very low rating of 0.21 air changes per hour. Because the house leaks so little air in and out, I incorporated controlled ventilation through the house, and the owners report that it is performing extremely well.
